My Favourite Shirt - Part Eight

Part Eight of 'My Favourite Shirt' has Paul Slater answering questions about his favourite Charlton Athletic shirt as well as other questions about his life supporting The Addicks.

Why is this your favourite shirt? Grey is an unusual colour to start. 1988/89 away Admiral. It epitomises the 1980s. Tight shoulders with shoulder trim made in cotton. Woolwich is an iconic sponsor for Charlton, like FADS.

Are there any happy or bad memories that come back to you when you see or think about this shirt? Every game back in that period was an away game as The Valley was no longer home until ‘1992’.

Any particular matches that stand out in your memory of this shirt? Not so much this shirt. The stand out game was the 1998 Div1 Playoff final vs Sunderland though the red Le Coq design then was rather bland.

Who was the best player to wear this shirt? Again, not a player to wear this particular grey shirt and not necessarily even the best player but a player and manager I most admire. A true gentleman on the pitch and off. A real ambassador of the game and very underrated – Chris Powell.

And the worst? Too many to name in my opinion:

Again not just this grey shirt but players over the years: Simon Church, Francis Jeffers, Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink, plus most players bought by Iain Dowie.

Why do you support Charlton? Local team to where I now live plus my wife’s family were all Charlton fans.

What was the first Addicks game you went to and what was the score? Live game was April 1994 vs Nottm Forest, since I lived in Hong Kong for 18 years. Forest won 1-0.

How have Charlton done this season and how do you see the season ending? I approached this with a mix of hope, expectation and realism. Especially under the false dawns and pessimism of the current Belgian ownership.

Div 1 is now a tough division with a lot of big clubs with former top flight experience – Sunderland, Portsmouth, Coventry, Luton.

Lee Bowyer has done a sound job and has a squad of talented players. With Lyle Taylor scoring 20+ goals, the first player we have had like that since Clive Mendonca, as an outright goal scorer is something we have missed. Forcibly selling his strike partner Karlan Grant to Huddersfield in January was a blow and our season looked possibly over. However, we have cemented a playoff spot come end of season and with a few twists yet to come, there is a tiny chance of an automatic promotion spot.

Your best Charlton 1-11 in your time supporting the club?
