My Favourite Shirt - Part Twenty Three

Part Twenty Three of My Favourite Shirt has Dagenham & Redbridge fan Jakob de Freitas with his 1999/00-2000/01 Daggers Away Shirt and describing life as a fan.

Jakob's cherished 1999/00-2000/01 Dagenham & Redbridge Away Shirt and the one shirt missing from his collection

What kind of memories come back with this shirt? FA Cup Third round run and taking Premier League Charlton Athletic to a replay after getting a 1-1 draw at the Valley. We was winning the game for the majority of the match.

Who was the best player to wear this shirt? Mark Janney, my all-time best player, and fortunately at that time, we had a great team of part-time players, winning the league and promotion and 3rd the following season in a tougher league combined with a FA Cup run and winning the Essex Senior Cup (a trophy Essex clubs used to take seriously). So luckily we didn’t have a bad player wear this shirt in my opinion.

Are there any shirts missing from your Daggers collection? I am missing just one Dagenham and Redbridge shirt it’s the 1997/99 Away shirt (the second picture above).

How do you rate the shirts of today compared to years gone by? The shirts from pre-2003 were brilliant, after that the designs haven’t been nowhere near as good. We have a couple of iconic kits as we won promotion from Conference to League One and League Two to League One, but nothing design wise touches pre-2003 jerseys.

Why do you support Dagenham & Redbridge? I am born and bred in Dagenham, My Dad has always been a fan and naturally he took me.

What was the first game you went to and what was the score? My first ever game was Dagenham and Redbridge 4-0 v Hornchurch in a FA Cup 1st Qualifying game in 1995. My Dad decided to take me as he used to play for Hornchurch and he was meeting a few friends at the game. (But obviously supporting Dagenham!)

How do you view The Daggers season before the current break in proceedings? We were badly struggling due to bad buying from former manager Peter Taylor, more than a few of his decisions were baffling. I think Daryl McMahon was on course to keep us up. Next season with a full pre-season, if this virus allows, I genuinely think we will be around the top 5 all season with a decent budget.
